There is enormous justification for helping our kids learn to map out their future. The most compelling reason is summarized by the economics concept of “opportunity cost.” I like the definition found on Wikipedia best, “Opportunity Cost: The loss of potential gain from other alternatives when one alternative is chosen.” When the career planning process is learned in high school, the opportunity costs are negligible. When kids learn by trial and error once leaving school, they often waste years of their lives and tens of thousands of their dollars by getting degrees that result in jobs they don’t like. Or, they never complete college and rush to find the first job that pops up. Additionally, the community suffers the opportunity cost of this lost human productivity.
